What is Gas Mark and why is it used?
Gas Mark is a temperature scale used primarily in the UK and Ireland for gas ovens. It was introduced when gas cookers became common in British homes. Gas Mark 1 is approximately 140°C (275°F) and each mark increases by roughly 14°C (25°F). Despite modern digital ovens, older British and Irish recipes still list Gas Mark numbers.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 1.8, then add 32. For example: 180°C × 1.8 = 324, plus 32 = 356°F. For a quick rough estimate, double the Celsius value and add 30.
What temperature is a moderate oven?
A moderate oven is typically 160–180°C (325–350°F), or Gas Mark 3–4. This is the most common baking temperature for cakes, biscuits, and roasted vegetables.
What is a "fan oven" adjustment?
Fan-assisted (convection) ovens circulate hot air, cooking food more efficiently. As a general rule, reduce the stated temperature by 20°C (about 35°F) when using a fan oven, or reduce cooking time by around 10–15%.
Is 200°C the same as 400°F?
Close, but not exactly. 200°C converts to 392°F — so 400°F is slightly higher. For most cooking purposes they're interchangeable, but for precise baking, use 392°F or stick with the Celsius value.
What Gas Mark is 220°C?
220°C is Gas Mark 7, which is classed as "very hot." This temperature is used for roasting meats to get a crispy exterior, cooking pizza, and high-heat baking like choux pastry.
